3D Movies: When the Magic Died

I have to admit, when I first saw the news about a new 3D technology being implemented across theaters I was excited.  I had always had a fascination with 3D movies, and when I saw the first 3D movie with this technology, Coraline, I was impressed.  The technology was leaps and bounds ahead of the classic red/cyan stereoscopic 3D, and I felt like I was witnessing a new era of cinema.  But then, movies like Clash of the Titans happened.  It was clear that the 3D for this movie was tacked on in post, and it was lazily implemented throughout the film.  Then, Disney decided to make almost every movie into 3D.  The market became over saturated with 3D movies, and it all seemed like a bad dream, where 3D turned into nothing but a money making gimmick.

This is when I realized that 3D will never be the standard for cinema, and it will always be a gimmick.  When moviemakers began to add 3D to their movies for the sole purpose of 3d being topical at the moment, that is when the magic dies.  If 3D is necessary for the film’s plot, and actually adds something to the entertainment value, then I am fine with it, but if it is there for no other reason than to make money off of a fad, then I say goodbye 3D.

Here’s a new movie from the makers of Pineapple Express featuring Danny McBride and James Franco. It looks pretty dumb, but it could also be hilarious. Check it out!

The trailer I chose for this week is Limitless starring Bradley Cooper.  The film is about a fictional drug, that when taken, gives the person limitless capabilities. The movie looks promising, although it is one of those that could either be very good, or a complete flop.  Enjoy!

Black Swan

I have to be honest; going into this film I was excited.  I am a big Darren Aronofsky fan and after seeing the trailer for Black Swan, I hoped for another film along the vein of Requiem for a Dream.  Needless to say, I was not at all disappointed.  For those of you who don’t know, the film follows a ballet dancer, Natalie Portman, who upon being cast as the star of Swan Lake goes through a series of tumultuous events that eventually lead to a complete mental breakdown.  The film is fast paced, with a sense of impending doom around every corner.  For those of you looking for a heartfelt coming-of-age ballet story, I implore you to stay away from this film.  Aronofsky uses his signature in-your-face style of filmmaking that is not for the meek.  From close ups of bloody toes, to a woman gouging herself with a nail filer, this is definitely not a family film.  Although this film does include its share of violence, I want to make it clear that this is not merely a film based on shock-value.  It is an intelligent story that will make even the most jaded moviegoer marvel at its unique retelling of the classic story of Swan Lake.  If you see one film this year, see Black Swan.  In a sea of overblown, special effects laden b-movies; Black Swan provides a thrilling, thought-provoking film that is sure to stand the test of time.

Grade: A

Welcome to the first “trailer of the week” post.  I will be posting a new movie trailer each week that I find interesting, whether old or new.  The first trailer I have selected is “Red State” directed by Kevin Smith.  Although it is a big departure from his previous films, this movie looks very promising.  Enjoy!
